With Thanksgiving on the horizon, like most families, we are beginning to plan for Christmas. Travel plans and holiday parties, are all marked on the calendar. However if you are Ryder, you started marking up toy catalogs as they arrived in the mail in early October by circling all your wishes.
It seems that Ryder's early planning for Santa's arrival would make gift giving for him very easy. Not so. You see, Ryder has champagne taste. Our family of six is more the beer budget type. The other kids are not so hard to gather ideas of small items they would like to receive. Leah wants makeup, earrings, art supplies, and a little sister (not happening.) Will can never have enough cologne or fast food gift cards. Parker is really hoping Santa comes through with a hamster and has requested that Santa bring him no clothing what so ever. Ryder wants robotic Legos ($349), a motorcycle ($199), and other items in the triple digits.
This week Ryder wrote his letter to Santa to be published in the newspaper with his first grade class. He asked for Legos and for his imaginary friend to become real. Yesterday I tried to pin him down with gift ideas for grandparents. Instead of ideas, he simply kept answering me by singing, "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas."
I'm sure Santa will come up with some surprises. Until then, we will continue to try to convince Ryder his first-world problems are not so bad. Hopefully baby Jesus will lend us a hand.
